I'm back with an amazing song to share with you all! Please believe me when I tell you that this song is so mellow and beautiful, but packs a powerful message. I'm inclined to fall love with songs that set deep thought into motion. Such was my reaction when I heard "Try" by Colbie Caillat, for the second time. The first time that I heard this song, I was just listening to see if I wanted to download it for free, from iTunes. I knew Colbie Caillat from her song “Bubbly” so I figured that this song could be just as great...and it is!
The song starts…
Put your make up on
Get your nails done
Curl your hair
Run the extra mile
Keep it slim so they like you, do they like you?
Get your sexy on
Don't be shy, girl
Take it off
This is what you want, to belong, so they like you
Do you like you?
When I actually listened to the words, I just could not contain my emotions! It’s like she had been reading my mind for the past few weeks. As women we go though soo much in our lives with society telling us to:
"look like this", "wear this", "you're too big", "you're too small", etc...
We have to stop letting society decide who we are. I had gotten to a point where I did not care what people thought, or cared to fit in; something I've been plagued with all of my life. Though as of late, that ugly monster of discontentment reared its ugly head, and I found myself slipping. I love how the song details the things that we love, and then asks, repeatedly, "do they like YOU?" The recurring theme that the artist wants to resonate within her audience is that you do not have to try so hard! Why do we do the things that we do? Are all the things we do to our appearance, all of the trends we follow, and all of the time put into our lives, for own happiness, or for someone to see us?
“Do they like YOU?”
Wait a second,
Why should you care, what they think of you
When you're all alone, by yourself, do you like you?
Do you like you?
Look at social media...its whole ploy is based around someone liking our pictures and posts, and following and friending us. Seriously, think about it! We post pictures of our lives and are basically saying, "this is my life, like me!” We have all seen those annoying people that say, “like for a like”, meaning you like a picture of theirs and they’ll like one of yours. Really, though…“Do they like YOU?”
Take your make up off
Let your hair down
Take a breath
Look into the mirror, at yourself
Don't you like you?
Cause I like you
At the end of the day, when it's all said and done, you put the phone down, log off the social media, wash off the makeup, shower off the fancy fragrances, pull your hair back, and stare in the mirror, "do you like YOU?" There's no amount of cosmetics, clothes, likes on social media, friends, money…ANYTHING, that can make you comfortable with your reflection and everything on the inside of you. You don’t have to try so hard to be what anyone expects you to be. People are fair-weather and if you do not like (let alone LOVE) who you see and what you are, you’ll be captive to the standards and expectations that others have for you!
Live your life! Love yourself!
Take a listen!
