Beauty + The Box Braids

"I want a girl with extensions in her hair
Bamboo earrings, at least two pair...
She can walk with her switch and talk with street slang
I love when I woman ain't afraid to do her thang." - LL cool j

The lyrics to LL Cool J's Around the Way Girl have been stuck in my head ever since I got my box braids installed.  That and images of Janet as Justice, Brandy during the 90's, and Joi from Friday, have been imprinted on my mind.  Needless to say, I'm loving these braids, and guess what? My 16 year old niece did them!

As with any protective style, caring for our hair during that time is crucial.  I have been on a protective style binge for the last few months, so I've been trying to pinpoint the best products to keep my hair moisturized.  So I went where any naturalista in need would go...Target!  Target, and other retailers like it, have really upped their appeal to the natural hair community, and we thank you for that!  While searching the aisle, I decided to get two products I've been mulling over purchasing for a while:

After spritzing my hair with some high quality H2O (Waterboy's Voice, lol), I spray the leave-in, generously on my scalp.  I follow up with the JBCO, massaging it onto my scalp.  My scalp feels sooooo much better after this!  It feels moisturized and I haven't experienced any itching.  The other day, I noticed a lot of frizziness along the length of the braids, so I smoothed some coconut oil onto the braids, then I wrapped my hair in a satin scarf.  The hair is still frizzy, but there is a noticeable difference.  I've had these braids for about 3 weeks, and I might keep them in for one more, but trust me, they'll be back (or my Marley Twists will be)!  Oh, and I'll be keeping these products around, too!  Also, when my edges get unruly, I tame them with a Curls Blueberry Bliss Control Paste, also from Target.  It holds up well, but is no match for Michigan's humidity!
